What is a wet belt?

A wet belt is a type of timing belt that runs inside the engine and is submerged in and lubricated by engine oil. Unlike traditional dry timing belts or cambelts, wet belts operate within the engine, reducing friction and wear due to constant lubrication and this leads to better efficiency and a longer lifespan.

What are the signs of wet belt problems?

Here are various signs to look out for that might mean that the wet belt in your vehicle needs attention:

1. If the engine warning light has come on this can indicate poor wet belt performance.
2. You might notice rough idling (if your vehicle vibrates or shakes when it’s stationary) and/or a loss of engine power.
3. Worn wet belts sometimes make tapping or rattling sounds, especially at startup.
4. A slipping wet belt can reduce fuel efficiency so you might find that you’re having to fill up with fuel more often.

How can I prevent wet belt problems?

There are a few things that you can do that can help to prevent costly repairs from a deteriorated wet belt:

1. Make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule (typically 80,000 – 150,000 miles or 10 years). If you’re not sure about this, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team at AES York Limited and we’ll be happy to advise you.
2. Always use the correct engine oil and make sure that it’s changed as per the manufacturer specifications – old, contaminated or incorrect oil can cause premature wet belt wear.
3. Listen for unusual noises – any ticking or rattling should be checked immediately.

How do I know if my car or van has a wet belt?

You can find out if your vehicle has a wet belt by checking in the manufacturer’s hand book but it’s probably just easier to give us a call at AES York Limited. We’re experts in everything to do with wet belts and will be happy to help you out.

There are some manufacturers that commonly use wet belts, including:

• Ford (EcoBoost engines, e.g., 1.0L, 1.5L)
• Stellantis Group (Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall, DS) – 1.2L PureTech

Can a wet belt be repaired?

Unfortunately, a wet belt cannot be repaired; if it shows signs of wear or damage, then the only real option is to book it into AES York Limited to have it replaced.

Wet belts are made of rubber with embedded fibres, and once they start breaking down because of oil contamination or age, they can’t be restored. Even if only part of the belt appears worn, if the hidden, internal fibres are weakened, the wet belt will be unreliable and possibly unsafe.

How often should a wet belt be replaced?
